Outliers Collective and Rukshaan Art present a spread of mediums in this virtual exhibition where watercolours and woodcuts stand next to oils and mixed media. From the studios of Soumen Das, Ramgopal Kumawat, Preeti Agrawal, Kundan Mondal and Gulab Kapadiya is the Baroda aesthetic: distinctive and diverse, driven forward by the artistic winds and art heritage Baroda is steeped in.
The selection of works made are all under $5,000, making them approachable acquisitions for young as well as established collectors. We invite you to explore our show, and please let us know if you have any questions!

The lightness of Gulab Kapadiya's canvases, where he paints a repetition of objects such as jute bags and bamboo baskets, are almost meditative renderings. The artist uses soft watercolour washes and layers them to create a vintage effect in an attempt to render the life of the 'container' as beautiful and meaningful.

Kundan Mondal’s works reflect his affinity for the concept of archives. He has painted subjects that seek to be a visual amalgamation of all sources, local and foreign, to build bridges between the East and West. Continuing his references with art historical images to talk about contemporary politics, the artist has created works to raise the question about the problem of violence and sociopolitical issues across the globe.

Preeti Agrawal has always used the woman as the protagonist in woodcuts that are bold in line, perspective, and colour. The women portrayed range from autobiographical to historical figures to mythical ones, each depticting strength, serenity, and vulnerability among other things. Preeti carves her images with the human figure dominating the work, and constantly explores visual textures and perspectives.

Ramgopal Kumawat employs his interpretation of Rajasthani katputli puppets to comment on social hierarchies and the games people play. Ram creates visual puns by juxtaposing these puppets against everyday objects like a ceremonial rifle or a vintage car. Despite their lively and delightful forms, the novelty of traditional puppet shows has clearly worn off over the years with other forms of entertainment taking precedence. Paying tribute to the puppets and the puppeteers, Ram revisits his roots in Rajasthan through his works, as this subject still tugs at his heartstrings.

Soumen Das's evocative landscapes create a reality of their own. It is not just dots and other forms that make up the image but a mesh of lines, layers and textures that lie under the colourful scheme of forms. The bright palette creates a celebratory mood. An abundance of primary colours of blues, yellows and reds, and secondary colours like green and orange create uninterrupted joy. There is a deep beauty and stillness but not necessarily calm, in his paintings.
