Subhakar grew up in a village, and has as a result been fascinated by cities and urbanization. His rural background has perhaps equipped him more than most to understand a lot of the inherent contradictions in urbanization. The cities he's lived in and their cultures have shaped his work tremendously. His background in printmaking has had a definite influence on his oils on canvas as well, with strong lines and defined forms making themselves very visible. Subhakar has been inspired by artists such as Edward Hopper, who he says, "have not created fantasy or imaginative works but have worked from their existing surroundings".
